    Notes
Half Cents Draped Bust (1800 – 1808) The half cent coinage is the lowest denomination struck by the United States. The Draped Bust half cent was based on the work by Robert Scot. His design was first used on the large cent denomination in 1796 and wasn’t used for the half cent until four years later. Each example was struck for circulation between 1800 and 1808 at the Philadelphia Mint. They were produced using 23.5mm copper planchets weighing 5.44 grams. Classic Head (1809 – 1836) The Classic Head half cent was produced by the Philadelphia mint from 1809-1836. The popular type design was created by John Reich and each example was struck in copper using 23.5mm planchets weighing 5.44 grams. These were the last copper coins struck for circulation prior to the installation of the steam powered presses in 1836. Braided Hair (1840 – 1857) Struck as proof only issues until 1849, the early dated Braided Half Cents are rare. The circulating strike began in 1849 and continued until 1857 using a 23mm plain edged copper planchet weighing 5.44 grams. The coins were designed by Mint Engraver Christian Gobrecht whose work included the Seated type of the era.
