Many engineering advances, brilliant new finishes, and dozens
of brand new features are incorporated in the wide range of 1965
models announced by BSA. Included are machines in 75cc, 175cc,
250cc, 350cc, 500cc, and 650cc capacities, in touring, sports, and
competition models.
The 650cc Twins
The Lightning Rocket 650cc Twin, is the pride of the BSA range,
an extremely popular Road Sports model in 1964, and now has
many improvements for ’65. This dual-carburetor sports motor-
cycle now has more power with opened-out intake ports, high-
compression pistons, new heavy-duty crankshaft, new long-life
alternator, new faster acceleration gearing, new, improved gear-
change mechanism, and literally dozens of detail improvements
throughout the machine. Built-in speed equipment includes a “full-
race” camshaft, heavy-base cylinder barrel, and the high efficiency
dual carburetor cylinder head with true hemispherical combustion
chambers for maximum horsepower. The Liglhning is fitted with
an 8000 rpm tachometer and 125 mph speedometer on a special
twin mount. A steering head lock is also standard equipment.
1965 Lightnings have a brighter appearance with metallic red
tank, (chrome.panels), polished alloy, black frame, chrome fend-
ers. and new style side-nacelle panels. These new panels are
smaller, more compact than the former type, so that both car-
buretors and their chrome air cleaners are in full view. As on all
the dual carburetor sports models, Gold Star type racing brakes
are fitted. These provide powerful braking and the advantage of
a racing type quick-change rear wheel.
Also adding io sharp appearance is the new semi-valanced rear
fender with a more compact tailight-license bracket assembly.
The Spitfire Hornet 650 Competition Twin: This BSA competi
lion model is a proven winner, having won many State and Re-
gional Championships in the 1964 season. The new Hornet includes
every power-equipment advance as specified for the Lightning
model, and full horsepower development for racing and competi-
tion is assured by a tuned straight-through exhaust system and
improved energy-transfer ignition system (no battery required).
The Hornet is supplied without lights, but for riders who may
want to operate their Hornet on the road. BSA has provided
built-in lighting coils making it easy and economical to mount a
direct lighting kit. The Hornet is brightly finished in Mandarin
Red, chrome, and polished alloy. As in all BSA models the frame
is black.
The Thunderbolt 650 Twin: This brawny highway cruiser is
equipped with a high efficiency single carburetor cylinder head,
is what BSA recommends for touring on super road, highway
or byway. /\ fast, powerful motorcycle, the Thunderbolt is
equipped with the same camshaft and high compression pistons
as the Lightning model, and has most of the other improvements
listed for that model. Finish is metallic blue, chrome, and polished
alloy with full-chrome valanced fenders.
The Cyclone 500 Twins: Two dual carburetor 500s are listed
for 1965, the Cyclone Road, and the Cyclone Competition models.
The Road Cyclone is a high performance, fully-equipped sports
twin with many of the engineering features specified for the
Lightning model. It boasts smooth, powerful action, zestful ac-
celeration. and a substantial advance in top speed over the single
carburetor model. Has battery ignition and lights. The Cyclone
Competition is designed for full power output, and is the speed...
