    This is a classic reference to the subject of mining, published by Charles Griffin & Co, London, in 1901. This is the fourth edition, revised and enlarged. Author is  C. Le Neve Foster of the Royal College of Mines. L.H. Cooke of the Royal College of Science of London was in charge of revising and enlarging for this fourth edition. Size  8 3/4" x 6" x 2 1/2" (h x w x thickness). xxviii+763 pages, plus 86 pages of advertisements pertaining to the mining industry. Well illustrated with over 700 illustrations and a beautiful photographic frontispiece.
    Subjects covered are Mode of Occurrence of Minerals; Prospecting; Boring; Breaking Ground; Supporting Excavations; Exploitation; Haulage; Hoisting; Drainage; Ventilation; Lighting; Descent and Ascent; Dressing; Mining Labour; Legislation Affecting Mining; Condition of the Miner; and Accidents. There is a 30-page index.
    Binding is dark maroon leather-like material, with title and author in gilt on the spine. There is a former owner's name on the front flyleaf. Back cover is starting to crack at hinge, easily repaired.
    There are reprints of this famous volume available on the internet, but this is an original copy, as printed in 1901. A classic, not usually found on the market.
