SCARCE HISTORIC ITEM!!This is Minnesota Geological Survey Special Publication SP-4:
The Middle and Upper Ordovician Conodont Faunas of Minnesota
. This 123-page report published in 1966 contains great background on the nature of conodonts as well as many descritions of the fossils and scores of examples in detailed photos in 15 plates in he back of the book.
Nobody really knows what Conodonts were. They have been extinct for a long time. The only remains they have left are the toothy looking fossils shown in the photos, but they are often so well preserved that the details allow them to be used in dating the rocks containing them. The fossils are usually recovered by dissolving the enclosing limestone and then identification is made using a microscope. I always imagine them as some sort of swimming worm with teeth, but who knows! There soft bits apparently were not preserved as fossils, so its anyone's guess. Comes with a large fold-out page of data about the presence of the various types within various formations.
Overall a great book to get you up to speed on these interesting fossils
. These state publications are often harder to find than USGS bulletins. Don't miss it.
