    Description

ONE OF THE SCARCER BOOKS I HAVE EVER OFFERED!!
This is New York State Museum Bulletin 123,
Iron Ores of the Clinton Formation in New York State.
    Published in
    1908
, this consists of the 76-page
    hard cover
book and all three of the original fold-out maps, plus many photos within the text.
This is a cool old book that describes the Clinton formation of New York, and the iron ores that were mined from it in many places. The Clinton formation outcrops in a narrow east-west band in central New York running from northern Otsego county, under Oneida lake, passing Syracuse to the north, Utica to the south, and on to the Niagara Falls area. It is composed of hematite that in some areas was plentiful enough to mine for iron ore. In some areas, fossils replaced by hematite are common in certain beds. See the photos above for a photo of bryozoans replaced by hematite.
The largest map has Utica within it and shows the trace of the Clinton beds south of town.
Some of the operations discussed in the book are:
    Cayuga County:
    Fair Haven Iron Co.
    Swartout opening
    Furnaceville Iron Co.
    Oneida County:
    Davis opening
    Wells and Ellingwood opening
    Franklin and Clinton mines
Elliot and Butler, or Borst mines
    Clinton Mills opening
    Norton opening
    Openings near Westmoreland
    Openings in Verona
    Wayne County:
    Openings
    in Wolcott
Minor workings or occurrences near Huron and Sodus
    Openings
    in the town of Ontario
Included in the book are numerous photos of processing plants in various locations, making this a great historical reference as well as a cool geologic report.
This is a cool old book that might lead you to some interesting historic mining areas and perhaps interesting fossil sites. A rare old item, especially in hard cover.
