Description
VINTAGE NEW YORK GEOLOGY!! RARE HARD COVER!! RARE CLASSIC MAP OF ALBANY AREA!!This is New York State Museum Bulletin 42,
Hudson River Beds Near Albany and their Taxonomic Equivalents.
The 108 page book published in 1901 details the work done to sort out the age relations and character of some confusing Paleozoic
sedimentary
rocks in the Albany/Hudson River area. Originally issued in soft covers, this was rebound to hard covers, while still preserving the original soft covers inside.
The issue addressed in this book was that there were so many similarities
among
the
exposures
of these rocks that they couldn't really tell whether they were dealing with one formation or several. Added structural complexity and sparse fossil locations made it harder. The history of work on this problem is covered in some detail.
This study focused on a small area and made an exhaustive search for fossil localities to help sort out the age relations and subunits. They found enough to help, and made careful collections in numerous
plates
. They called these stations, and the locations are shown on the newly drafted map of the area. Each station is described in the text, along with a list of the fossils found there. In the back there are two plates of excellent drawings of fossils from the area.
But the prize here is the full color map of the area, with Albany near the center. This is known as a classic vintage map and is the reason this book is so uncommon. Unfortunately this map is often removed and framed as a print, but this one is complete. A classic of New York geology and a rare book you will not see again for a long while.
A cool, rare book for the New York geologist, paleontologist, fossil collector, Albany resident, or historian. Rare to find a vintage copy in hard covers. Book measures about 10x7 inches.
