Description
Soil blocks have become the go to form of seed starting these days and rightly so. They require less initial material and don't require a pot to contain the cube. There are great savings in space and materials like plastic pots. The tool shown in the pictures will allow the user to easily make their own starter seed blocks of soil for the purpose of providing the garden seed a compact and suitable start point for optimum growth prior to transplanting to a pot or outside in the garden. Additionally, using a soil block will allow the future planting to go smoothly with less to no shock to the seeding from the start.
With a soil blocker the initial soil mix you use can be made or purchased for far less than premade pots and will work better. Also, one can custom formulate their own starter mix to produce soil blocks specific to the plants they want to grow. Everything from melons to orchids need various soil consistency and nutrient loads to start and grow properly. Once the soil of choice is determined, one can produce soil blocks with that mix over and over again.
Many home gardeners have the need for a soil blocker but find the commercially available devices are way too expensive (just as I do). That is why I did some research and came up with this design.
This device is made for individual gardeners that want a soil blocker for their specific needs and not one that might be used by a farm or commercial enterprise that will produce multiple blocks for larger operations.
The soil blocker shown in the pictures will produce individual blocks that are 1 1/2" in square and up to 2" tall with a premade divot for the seed.
All seeds have a particular depth that they like to be started once set. For this reason, I have included three different and interchangeable divot ends - 1/4", 1/2" and 3/4". These may be used as needed to accommodate most seed types or cuttings one would wish to plant and are easily swapped out as needed.
This soil blocker is easy to use and constructed entirely out of noncorroding materials (no metal parts). No material is used in its construction that could become waterlogged and swell as would happen with homemade devices using wood plungers.
