Description
A very traditional style choker necklace (like those worn by many Native American tribes) of "hair pipe" deer bone beads, vintage large ox blood red disc beads, turquoise stones, silver accent beads and elk leather - by Paul St John, Mohawk craftsman. This is larger and heavier (closer to vintage necklaces) than most made now. The deer bone is heavy... as are the vintage red beads. It is 3 strands - 15.75" long end to end, excluding the elk leather ties which are each about 17.5" long. The beadwork nearly covers my entire neck ... but you can tie the ties tight around your neck for a choker necklace or tie them so the bone/bead strands hang down as far as you want.
The disc beads are vary slightly in diameter and depth but are about 3/8" diameter and a bit over 1/8" in depth. (These could be vintage ox blood coral discs...Paul often used vintage beads, I can usually find the beads he uses and tell dates, where they were made etc. I can not find any like these!) At center of each strand is a turquoise stone. The bones are 2" long at ends, 1/2" long at center.
Paul St. John lives in Maine, his mother is Passamaquoddy. He grew up on the Mohawk lands in New York, his father's homeland. He has been doing beadwork, baskets, quill and leather work for about 35 years. He does so many types of crafts and does them all well! Last photo is of Paul.
Paul makes such a variety of items... this is an example of his bead work, he also does glass bead designs (such as flowers, turtles, geometric, etc) on knife sheaths, medicine bags, moccasins, necklaces, bracelets, Iroquois beadwork on bags, dolls, pillows etc... He makes amazing dolls, does birch bark work - with quill design or scrape work design... on boxes, barrettes, picture frames, lamp shades and more. His sweetgrass coiled baskets with birch bark medallions on the lid feature animal, bird and floral designs (His hummingbirds, great blue herons, woodpeckers, moose and deer are my current favorites --- tho in the past I have had other favorites..... Take a look at my ebay store to find your favorite Paul St John piece... then in 3 or 4 months - look again. Likely you will find new items by him and find some new favorites!
