SCARCE VINTAGE ITEM!! GREAT HISTORY!! ONLY ONE AVAILABLEThis is USGS Professional Paper 541,
The Alaska Earthquake, March 27, 1964: Field Investigations and Reconstruction Effort.
This 111-page hard cover book published in 1966 relates the history of events starting the evening of March 27, 1964, when one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded rocked the areas around Anchorage. The devastation and loss of life were colossal. The many photos in the book show just how much destruction there was and how the landscape was altered as a result. A number of piers were elevated so much by the change in ground level as to be unusable afterward. Railways were buckled, tanks farms were destroyed, roadways collapsed, buildings fell or were damaged beyond repair. The earthquake set off tsunamis that killed people as far away as California!
This was a singular event at the time, and we have seen few that match it since. This book is a fascinating look at the story that goes beyond the event itself and delves into recovery and reconstruction efforts in the year or two that followed. It's a rare slice of Alaska and US history, sure to be of interest to residents of the region and beyond. It is not very technical from a geologic standpoint, so should be readable by a wide audience.
