$ 16.89

Availability: 100 in stock
  • Condition: Report consists of a large text and a map case with 33 maps. Text has writing on the cover. There is some text bending and corner bumping. Cover has irregular fading, plus some nick in the back. Spine paper is damaged at top. There are no marks in the text. Map case is splitting at one hinge in the front - typical of these huge reports. The map pocket is torn beyond repair. The maps are unmarked. A few have some crinkled edges. None have pinholes or tape marks. A fair to good example of this report. Some of the issues are endemic to huge reports like these since the map cases were never strong enough for their size, resulting in spitting of the case, tearing of the pockets, and crinkling of the maps.

    Description

    SCARCE VINTAGE ITEM!!!
    This is USGS Professional Paper 299,
    Geology of the Arkansas Bauxite Region
    . Published in 1956, this is a rare huge report on this interesting area. It consists of the
    268-page book
    , and a map case containing
    33 maps
    , a few of which are full color, many more two-color and some B&W. There are also many photos, diagrams, and maps within the text.
    This area is known for large bauxite deposits in two main areas, around Pulaski county, the other in Saline county. The bauxite formed from weathering of large intrusions of nepheline syenite - a granite-like rock that lacks quartz. The deposits are unusual in the world and come in several types, which are all described with pictures. Many mines exploited these deposits and are discussed in some detail in a large section within the text. Many have individual maps in the stack of maps. The stack of maps is over an inch high, and the large color ones are over four feet wide - bigger than my photo stand.
    This report is gigantic even by USGS standards. The maps are great. The descriptions of individual deposits take up about a hundred pages of the book. There is nowhere else to get al this under one cover.
    Please read the condition notes. There is significant wear.
