    Description

    HARD TO FIND!!
    This is USGS Bulletin 1042-S,
Geology and Fluorspar Deposits, Big Four Fault System, Crittenden County, Kentucky
. Published in 1959, there can’t be many of these around. This publication consists of the 26-page book and comes complete with BOTH OF THE ORIGINAL GEOLOGIC MAPS. This is a cool publication on an important fluorite locality that produced many nice specimens. Although not as prolific as the Illinois localities, the mines in this area also produced their share of nice fluorite in various colors. Here is a list of the mines discussed in this book:
    Big Four mine
    LaRue mine
    Hayshed mines
    Zinc prospects
Cartwright or Deer Creek mine area
    Macer mine
    Mitchel shaft
    Lead and Reed shafts
    Riggs shaft
These are some of the minerals found in this area according to the text:
    Anglesite
    Barite
    Calcite
    Cerussite
    Fluorite
    Galena
    Marcasite
    Pyromorphite
    Quartz
    Smithsonite
    Sphalerite
This book would serve as a good guide to collecting in this area, and to the history of the specimens from it. All in all this is a rare publication on an important district and would make a great addition to any collector’s pack, or bookshelf.
