Description
AMAZING FOSSIL PLANTS!! LOCALITY INFORMATION!!This is USGS Professional Paper 98-R,
Contributions to the Geology and Paleontology of San Juan County, New Mexico - Non-Marine Cretaceous Invertebrates of the San Juan Basin
.
Published in 1916, this is a rare and important work, seldom seen or offered on Ebay. This 19-page book includes five plates of photos of the interesting fossil shells from this area in NW New Mexico.
This is an interesting report that describes numerous bivalve fossils from this little known fossil area. The San
Juan
basin is better known for coal beds, leaf fossils and and fossil turtles. But other formations in the basin had fresh to brackish water supporting a completely different ecosystem. These fossils come from the Mancos Shale, Mesaverde formation, Lewis Shale, and the Pictured Cliffs sandstone, all of Cretaceous age. The text contains detailed descriptions of the fossils, and with each description there is some
locality information
. New Mexico is not the first place you think when looking for fossil shells, but some of these are pretty nice and would look great in a collection.
This would serve as an excellent reference for the serious collector and a significant addition to any library on fossils, or of New Mexico geology. It is a scarce item. These pre-WWII reports are also especially hard to find.
