    Description

GREAT GEOLOGIC HISTORY IN YELLOWSTONE COUNTRY!!
    This is USGS Bulletin 1149,
Geology of the Gardiner Area, Park County, Montana
. Published in 1969, this is a pretty scarce item. This 118-page book comes complete with the original full color geologic map. This is a great old publication that details the geology of this beautiful area near the north entrance to Yellowstone National Park. Gardiner and the Park entrance are toward the south end of the map. The map is at a scale of 1:24,000. so it covers about 52 square miles.
This is a very interesting publication not often available these days, and popular due to its place in Yellowstone country. The text covers all the geology in detail and the map really brings it to life. Rock in the area include Precambrian, Mississippian through Jurassic rocks, and ending with Yellowstone volcanics and later alluvial sediments. It is a wild ride of geologic history covering over a billion years!
The area is known for some coal deposits, plus some gold and tungsten deposits, which are discussed in a section in the book. Another section covers the geologic history, so you don't have to figure it out just from the formation descriptions. It's such a great book.
This is a great, very complete report on this area, and a scarce item these days. It would be of interest to anyone planning a trip to Yellowstone that wants a deeper perspective on the geology of the area.
