Description
CLASSIC PLACER AREA!! GO FIND SOME GOLD!!This is USGS Bulletin 699,
The Porcupine Gold Placer District, Alaska
. Published in
1919
, this 29-page book is a scarce item these days. It details placer deposits along several creeks in a mountainous area 30 or so miles west of Skagway, Alaska. The occurrence of gold along the various streams is detailed, along with some history of their production. In addition, the bedrock sources of the gold are discussed.
Bound within the book are
both of the original maps
, one of which is a
full color map
of the placers and the surrounding geology. The other map covers a wider area and shows Skagway. Gold is distributed along several creeks and streams in an area covering several square miles. The full color map shows an area of about 500 square miles, and shows just how extensive the placers are – they run for miles along several of the streams and creeks of the area. The book also contains numerous photos of the area, including old workings along the streams. I would think there is still some significant gold to be found in this area, and this book would be a good starting point to learning about it.
However the color map is also just plain cool looking and would look great framed. The style and coloring have a real vintage look that is very appealing. It would make a great addition to a man cave, beside some old mining stock certificates or other artifacts. Don't miss out on this great item!
