Description
DON'T LET THE TITLE SCARE YOU OFF!!This is USGS Professional Paper 496-B,
Geochemistry and Paleolimnology of the Trona Deposits and Associated Authigenic Minerals of the Green River Formation, Wyoming.
So the title is a mouthful on this one, but don't let that worry you. This is
actually
pretty
understandable with a reasonable geology and chemistry knowledge base. Limnology is just the study of lakes - paleolimnology is just the study of ancient lakes. No big deal, right?
Published in 1969, this 71 page report comes with both original maps that come in a pocket in the back of the book. It describes the history of ancient Gosiute Lake, which existed in the Eocene and gave rise to the Green River formation, famous for fossil fish, plants, and huge deposits of trona, which are still being mined. It comes with some interesting photos of unusual minerals in various rock types. There is a really a mineralogic freak show at this place!
The history of this lake is summarized in the abstract and detailed throughout the book. It is quite an interesting story of changing climate and changing lake dynamics. The lake used to be entirely fresh water, with an outlet river, but had arid periods in which it was smaller and salty, without any throughput. The unusual chemistry of the lake gave rise to many unusual minerals which are discussed in the book, including:
Trona
Halite
Shortite
Northupite
Pirssonite
Gaylussite
Nahcolite
Thermonatrite
Wegschiederite
Tychite
Acmite
Magnesioriebeckite
Labuntsovite
Leucosphenite
Analcite
Searlesite
Stevensite
Adularia
Albite
Loughlinite
Pyrite
This book covers a large area in southern Wyoming and parts of northern Utah and Colorado. An interesting book that takes a close look at the chemical processes responsible for the world class trona deposits and other features of the ancient lake. A cool old book.
