    Description

    SCARCE AND POPULAR!!
    This is USGS Bulletin 982-E,
Iron-Ore Deposits of the Iron Mountain District, Washington County, Idaho.
Published in 1953, this is a scarce report on this geologically interesting area. This 31-page book comes complete with
    ALL SIX
original maps in a pocket in the back of the book. It discusses It discusses interesting skarn deposits containing iron ore minerals hematite and magnetite. These are locally accompanied by
    spectacular garnets
    and other skarn minerals, including:
    Epidote
    Chlorite
    Quartz
    Hematite
    Magnetite
    Prochlorite
    Pyrite
    Chalcopyrite
    Calcite
I was not aware of this district until I got this report. So I did a little digging and found information on Mindat.org that showed pictures of some amazing well-formed brown garnet crystals as large crystals over a half inch in size. Sounds like it would definitely be worth a trip, because those things are incredible! I would go there in a heartbeat if I lived closer.
The maps in this report cover the district as a whole, and several individual deposits in the area. They are quite detailed and could really help you find your way around the area. It is also near eastern Oregon.
A variety of rock types are present here, including
    Granite
    Andesite
    Marble
    Basalt
    Conglomerate
    Skarn
All in all this is a great old report on a good mineral area. It should be of great interest to mineral collectors, historians, or anyone that wants to give the place a shot.
Some of the mines discussed in the text include:
    Campbell

    Mortimer
