Description
BACK AFTER TWO YEARS!! CLASSIC REPORT ON A COOL MINERAL AREA!!This is USGS Bulletin 922-M,
Tin Deposits of the Black Range, Catron and Sierra Counties, New Mexico.
Published in 1941, there can't be many of these around! The publication consists of a 16-page book and all eight of the original geologic maps. Four of the maps (all of them three-color geologic maps - black-red-green) are separate maps in a pocket in the back of the book and four are bound into the book as foldout maps. Minerals of this area include:
Cassiterite
Hematite
Magnetite
Cristobalite
Tridymite
Chalcedony
Opal
Quartz
Fluorite
Various Zeolites
Calcite
Areas in this study include:
Taylor Creek Area
Squaw Creek Area
Hardcastle Creek Area
But among these there are actually twelve location of interest.
Several of the maps are of underground workings. The area was explored by the Bureau of Mines with several underground adits and shafts, and the New Mexico Tin and Metals Co. The maps show the locations of veins and stringers of cassiterite and hematite, and even a vein of fluorite with chalcedony! Sounds like it would be worth a look! This would be a good companion during your mountain ramblings and a great tool for targeting collecting locations. Great for a historian or arm chair geologist too!
As always, please read the condition notes.
