Description
This is USGS Bulletin 995-D,Geologic Investigation of the Boyertown Magnetite Deposits in Pennsylvania
. Published in 1953, there can't be many of these around. The publication consists of a 14-page book and all five of the original maps, one of which is a regional map and the others are prospect maps and geophysical cross-sections. Four of the maps are two color (red-black). There is also a small two-color map on a page of the book. Just flipping through it I noticed that some of the deposits had shafts and were mined underground. I'd sure want to check! The companies and mentioned include:
Boyertown Ore Co.
Defense Plant Corporation
A couple different ore bodies are mentioned as well:
Gabel-Warwick
Phoenix
Brower mine
Fegley mine
Magnetite was the
chief
mineral in these mines, and they explored for
hidden
deposits using magnetometers across a large area. A couple hidden magnetic areas were discovered! Not sure what happened after that!
This is an interesting piece of mining history for Pennsylvania and a scarce report.
