    Description

HARD TO FIND THIS ONE!!  TOO POPULAR FOR ITS OWN GOOD!!  GIANT BERYL!!
This is USGS Professional Paper 248-D,
Mica Deposits of the Southeastern Piedmont, Parts 5 and 6, Shelby-Hickory District North Carolina, and Outlying Deposits in North Carolina.
Published in 1953, this a rare item that is highly desirable to any mineral collector!. This is Volume 4 of a seven-volume series. I am currently offering some of the other volumes of this set in my store.
This volume contains Parts 5 and 6 under one cover. It contains the 90-page book and all SEVEN of the original maps, all in excellent condition. Want to find out where there is a pegmatite that has beryl crystals over a foot in diameter? It's in here! One of the maps pinpoints 162 different mines, and another map pinpoints a further 38 mines, ALL BY NAME! That is two hundred mines! Descriptions and mineralogy for the mines are given in the text. Some of the maps are of specific mine workings. An rare and desirable publication. Here is just a short list of some of the mines:
    Patterson Mine
    Gwaltney Prospects
    Dagenhart Mine
    McGee Mine
    Sigmon Mine
Drum Mine (this one is in Hickory!)
    Noah Young Mine
    Floyd Brittan Mine
    Reed Mine
    Abernathy Mines (several)
    Tallant Prospect
    Hoyle Mine
    Bumgarner Mine
    Wehunt Prospect
    J.B. Peeler Mine
    Royster Mine
I COULD GO ON AND ON! You get the idea there are a LOT of mines described here! They are scattered throughout Alexander, Caldwell, Catawba, Gaston, Burke, Iredell and Cleveland Counties. The second part of the book, “Outlying Deposits in North Carolina” also includes sites in Warren, Franklin, Wake, Caswell, Yadkin, McDowell, Rutherford, Polk and Wilkes Counties. What a wealth of information! Furthermore, a location for corundum is also mentioned in the text.
