Description
SCARCE ITEM!! ONLY ONE I HAVE!! FROM MY PERSONAL LIBRARY!!This is USGS Bulletin 1168,
Stratigraphy of the Dripping Spring Quartzite, Southeastern Arizona
. Published in 1964, there can't be many of these around. The publication consists of the 119-page book and the original map and diagram that both come in a pocket in the back of the book.
This is an interesting book with a focus on this formation that is host to some significant uranium deposits the area is known for. The thrust of this report is working out the details of the layering within this widespread formation, probably with the goal of identifying the parts most favorable for uranium mineralization, since that was a big deal. The map shows the distribution of the formation across large areas of Arizona. The diagram shows how the subunits and features within the formation correlate from area to area.
Pretty cool stuff.
A
little
background
on the Dripping Spring Quartzite: It was host to several significant uranium deposits.
The uranium
deposits
included three kinds: veins, blanket deposits, and irregular deposits, including
the following:
Red Bluff area
, including the Rainbow and Red Bluff Deposits
Bull Canyon area
, including the Sue and Donna Lee deposits
Workman Creek area
, including the Hope, Little Joe, Lost Dog, Lucky Stop, Suckerite, and Workman deposits
Mescal area
, including the Lucky Boy and Sky deposits
Roosevelt quadrangle area
, including the Blevins Canyon, Fairview, and Great Gain deposits
And other deposits, including the Black Brush, First Chance, Shepp #2, and Snakebit deposits
Many
of these were mined with underground workings.
These deposits have quite diverse mineralogy, with far more minerals than most uranium districts.
Minerals
known from deposits in the area include:
Uraninite
Coffinite
Molybdenite
Pyrrhotite
Chalcopyrite
Sphalerite
Galena
Pyrite
Marcasite
Chlorite
Nontronite
Metatorbernite
Bassetite
Uranocircite
Beta-Uranophane
Uranophane
Hyalite
Limonite
Gypsum
Malachite
Azurite
Chalcocite
Covellite
Barite
Goethite
These minerals and deposits are not discussed in this text, but are mentioned in other reports about the area's mines. I provide this additional information as
background
.
This would make a great guide for understanding this significant formation, or an essential historical reference on the area. All in all it is a scarce and desirable geologic publication on an important area. The maps are a great addition, and it is nice to find them all present - so often they get lost.
