    Description

SCARCE ITEM!!  PRETTY POPULAR IT SEEMS!!   I GUESS PEOPLE LIKE GRANITES!!
This is USGS Professional Paper 554-C,
    The Nature of Batholiths
. Published in 1967, this is a very nice and desirable item. This 30-page report details the origin, emplacement, and environment of batholiths. We see them as granites and the like, and they are definitely all that, but there is so much more to their formation than meets the eye. We usually think of granites in the Sierras and elsewhere as going down and down, but these big granite areas actually live within the upper crust and have differing rocks beneath them. They also have a huge effect on their surroundings when they intrude into the crust, cooking the nearby rocks, and moving them around.
This is a great book that helps make these big beasts much more understandable. If you have ever hiked amidst big granites in California, Idaho, Maine, Montana, and other states this would be of interest to you. I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this and learned a lot from it even though I have been a geologist for 20 years. It's a really great book.
