    Description

    HOT ITEM!!
    This is USGS Bulletin 1072-H,
Geology and Thorium Deposits of the Wet Mountains, Colorado - A Preliminary Report.
This item consists of a 45-page book and both of the original maps in a pocket in the back of the book. This is an unusual study of this important thorium-bearing area. The wet mountains in the area studied consist of ancient metamorphic and igneous rocks that are cross cut by many young thorium bearing veins. The maps show the area in detail, including the locations of hundreds of individual veins. Some of the veins are fifty feet wide and nearly a mile long!!
A surprising array of different minerals occur in the veins. The following are mentioned in the text:
Quartz, sometimes as smoky quartz crystals
    Barite
    Ankerite
    Thorium bearing minerals, possibly thorite
    Pyrite
    Chalcopyrite
    Tetrahedrite
    Galena
    Fluorite
    Secondary copper minerals
    Riebeckite
    Arfvedsonite
Barite was mined in a couple places. In addition, pegmatites, a pyroxene-scapolite gneiss, and an unusual albite syenite are also mentioned in the area. It is a bunch of wild geology, for sure.
This would be a great item for any mineral collector or uranium-thorium enthusiast. The vein map can lead you directly to some of the most significant veins. If I lived in the area I would certainly give the place a shot!
    Expert packing assured.
