    RARE ITEM!! MINERAL COLLECTOR'S FAVORITE!!
    Here is USGS Bulletin 1569,
Cassiterite Occurrences in the Shelby Area, North and South Carolina
. This scarce 14-page booklet is surprisingly interesting. During a regional study of stream sediments, cassiterite started showing up in certain areas, mainly near Shelby. Cassiterite is the chief ore of tin, a somewhat scarce metal that is still in demand today in the tech sector. Concentrations were in some cases pretty high, and the individual grains of Cassiterite ranged up to about an inch in size.
There were two odd things about the occurrences. First, they are away from the better known Kings Mountain belt, which has numerous clustered tin, spodumene, and beryl deposits associated with pegmatites. Second they could not find any evidence of cassiterite in the rocks near the stream occurrences, even through the cassiterite appeared to be near source and the drainages were small and near their headwaters, often just tiny unnamed little streams. The last few pages give exact locations where Cassiterite was found. There are many locations.
This is a pretty cool little book that might turn you one to some interesting finds if you decide to go panning in some of these streams.
