    Description

HARD TO FIND!!  SELDOM SEEN!! FULL SIZE, FULL COLOR MAP!!
    This is USGS Bulletin 1441,
Rocks and Mineral Resources of the Wolf Creek Area, Lewis and Clark, and Cascade Counties, Montana
. Published in 1978 this is a pretty scarce item. This 91-page book comes complete with the large full-color map, and an additional chart of the rock units! This is a great old publication that details the geology and ore deposits of this rich and beautiful area. The color map in this report really make the geology stand out.
This is a very interesting publication not often available these days. It gives a full account of all the rocks in the area, which includes sedimentary rocks of the Belt Group and later ones as well, plus numerous igneous rocks ranging in age from Precambrian gabbro to Tertiary porphyries. There is even a 3000 foot long dike of something called an analcime gabbro containing labradorite and analcime as well as other minerals! There is also a trachybasalt, which is another odd rock. Such unusual rocks might have some interesting minerals associated with them.
The area is also known for some
    copper, silver, and gold
veins in various locales, and several mines and prospect areas are described, including:
    Rosetta mine
    Gladstone Creek
    Middle Fork of Little Creek
    Lanigan mountain
    Willis Creek
    Little Creek and Sheep Creek
The Rosetta mine is noted for Azurite, Chalcopyrite, and Barite. It produced mainly copper with some
    silver and gold.
Some of the other veins and prospects are noted for:
    Bornite
    Azurite
    Malachite
    Pyrite
    Chalcopyrite
    Ankerite
    Quartz
    Chalcocite
    Tennantite
    Tenorite
    Covellite
The locations of these veins is pretty precisely given down to the quarter section, so with a little research you could get pretty close to these things and see what minerals can be collected. Often these little known sites have not really been looked at for their minerals, and the writers of these reports usually focused on the principal minerals, not noting the scarce ones that could be found. They are really worth a close look if you're a mineral collector.
In addition to these there is a site were titanium-bearing iron ore is found, and several other resources in other parts of the area.
This is a great, detailed report on this area, with a very nice map.
