Description
Here the powder horn (of cow horn) is a vintage piece with original incised snapping turtle -a carved turtle head(of antler?)
is affixed to the wooden plug and a turtle tail
(of antler?)
is the stopper. These make the vintage cow horn powder horn into a "turtle". This powder horn was in an Iroquois family for some time. For the Iroquois the snapping turtle is part of their creation story - the earth was created on the back of a snapping turtle where life began to grow.
When this came to
Paul St John, Mohawk craftsman - it had a beaded strap of calico backed wool with leather ends. The original strap has been replicated by Paul St John - he replaced the moth eaten wool and the mildewed cracking leather replicating the wave design in vintage white seed beads on black vintage wool with red cotton edge binding and a vintage print calico cotton backing. The leather is moosehide - like the original, - the thinner hide from the moose belly...
Powder horn is 9.5" long - (just the cow horn part) .. with the turtle head and tail it is 12.75". At the top wide part it is 2.75" in diameter.. The "tail" stopper is 3.5" long. The beaded strap is 2.25" wide and 28' long from the center back to the attachment point
(the leather tip of strap) ... strap is 56" long total.
You can use this as part of your regalia - Or you can use it as a spectacular display piece.
